The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs including the Appenzeller, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. The Swiss Mountain Dogs are descended from Molossus type dogs, brought by the Romans as they passed through Helevetia over two thousand year ago. The Entlebucher Sennenhund originated from Entlebuch, Switzerland. These medium sized dogs where used mostly as herding dogs for cows, horses and also hogs. In the present day they are good guard dogs and family companions. This strong willed and independent dog is protective over its family and very loving with lots of energy.
